About Me

remodeling to acommodate an elderly loved one

When I invited my mother to come and live with my family, we had to make some changes to accommodate her. The changes that needed to be made were all within reason and were all required so that she could get around with her walker and eventually a wheelchair if need be. I hired a remodeling contractor to assist us with making the changes. I learned a lot while discussing what needed to be done and what it would take to get it complete. I created this blog with the hopes of helping other families that are considering making the same changes in their homes.

3 Signs Your Asphalt Roof Needs To Be Replaced

Your asphalt shingled roof is a long-lasting and durable roof, but it isn't going to last forever. Damage can occur from weather-related instances, and you could be left with a roof that is no longer protecting your roof the way that it should. If your roof is damaged, it can lead to other damage throughout your home such as water damage in your attic, ceiling, or even in your walls. Water damage can lead to other issues and concerns as well, including pest infestations or mold/mildew growth. You need to keep a close eye on your roof and inspect it often for damage. If you suspect that you have damage to your roof, it should be replaced. If you aren't sure what type of damage to watch out for, read on for some of the signs that may indicate your roof needs to be replaced.

1. Your Shingles Are Shiny

If your shingles are shiny and they don't appear to have any rough spots on them, it could mean that the asphalt has worn off of the shingles and all you are left with is the backing of the shingle, which can protect your roof, but it will not repel water like it once did. You could be more susceptible to water damage if you don't have enough protection on your roof, and your roof may need to be replaced, especially if you have a lot of shiny spots like this on your roof.

2. Your Roof Appears To Be Wet

If your roof appears to be wet and it hasn't rained in a while, and other roofs around your home all look dry, it could be a sign that your roof needs to be replaced. Your roof may have water damage already and the wet spots that you see are a sign that your roof is already holding moisture. Your attic may see some of these signs of water damage as well, and a quick look with a flashlight may help you determine if you already have water damage to your home.

3. Your Shingles Are Peeling

If your shingles appear to be peeling upwards, or they just don't look flat to the roof like they once did, it's a sign of damage either from rain or snow or from the sun. Either way, the roof should be replaced, and soon, before you end up with a major problem on your hands.

If you notice any of these signs of damage to your roof, you should have it inspected by a professional roofing company to determine if you need a new roof. Contact a local roofing service to learn more.
