About Me

remodeling to acommodate an elderly loved one

When I invited my mother to come and live with my family, we had to make some changes to accommodate her. The changes that needed to be made were all within reason and were all required so that she could get around with her walker and eventually a wheelchair if need be. I hired a remodeling contractor to assist us with making the changes. I learned a lot while discussing what needed to be done and what it would take to get it complete. I created this blog with the hopes of helping other families that are considering making the same changes in their homes.

4 Tips For Choosing The Perfect Home Windows

If you are thinking about replacing the windows on your home, you should be sure that you take the time to choose the perfect home windows. Here are four tips to help you do this:

  1. Consider the Sun: If the sun rises on the left side of your home, for example, you don't want to install windows that allow in a great deal of light since this will heat up your home quickly. Instead, choose windows that are smaller and have enough paneling to block out some of the light. Then, once they are installed, you can add bushes outside to block out more of the light and drapery that you can have covering the windows during the time the sun is coming through this side of the house. The side of the house that doesn't see direct sunlight, however, can have large, open windows that will allow natural light inside of your home without dramatically heating up your home throughout the day.
  2. Consider the Architecture of Your Home:  If you live in an adobe style home, for example, then traditional style windows with shutters are not going to look good. It's best to install windows that are going to add to the style of your home and not be too distracting. You should also consider whether or not round or square windows are best. Round windows look great on homes that have rounded architectural features.
  3. Consider Ventilation: In the kitchen, you want windows that allow the space to ventilate properly while cooking. The same goes for the bathroom. The windows should open up fully to allow the hot, humid air out of the house. You also want to consider whether or not you want a breeze to come into certain areas of the home. If not, then you want windows that open upwards, similar to an awning. This will keep the air out instead of allowing it to rush into the space.
  4. Consider Maintenance: If you are able to provide maintenance to your windows regularly without it becoming too much of a hassle, then wooden window frames may be the best option. Wood provides a natural and traditional look to the home. However, you will need to check for rot and you will need to repaint them often. On the other hand, vinyl windows only need to be cleaned with soap and water every once in a while, but other than that require no additional maintenance.

When you consider these four tips for choosing the perfect home windows, such as from Master Remodelers, you can be sure that you make the best choice in the end for your comfort in your home and for the value of the home, as well.
