About Me

remodeling to acommodate an elderly loved one

When I invited my mother to come and live with my family, we had to make some changes to accommodate her. The changes that needed to be made were all within reason and were all required so that she could get around with her walker and eventually a wheelchair if need be. I hired a remodeling contractor to assist us with making the changes. I learned a lot while discussing what needed to be done and what it would take to get it complete. I created this blog with the hopes of helping other families that are considering making the same changes in their homes.

Eager to Make Your Bathroom More Mold Resistant? 3 Ways to Remodel the Bathroom

Bathroom remodeling should be one of the first things that you think of if you notice that mold has become a problem. With how moist the bathroom can be due to people taking frequent showers or baths, you'll need to take care to limit just how much moisture sits in the air and make steps toward making your bathroom more mold resistant in the future. The following three projects can be just what you need to do to make sure that your bathroom isn't going to have any issues with mold anytime soon.

Get a Ventilation Fan Installed

If you're concerned about there being a lack of air circulation in the bathroom that is leading to mold growth getting out of control, it's a good idea to get a fan installed. Ventilation fans are compact and can be installed in the ceiling to help move air around to combat mold growth. Keeping the ventilation fan on every time that you use the shower or bath and making sure to keep it on for a while after you hop out of the water can help ensure that you won't have mold growth that could have been prevented with air circulation.

Opt for High-Gloss Paint When Painting

Painting the bathroom can be a fantastic idea if you want to make a drastic change to the way that your bathroom looks. A fresh coat of paint can quickly alter the look of your bathroom with very little cost, making painting a smart idea. Before you get started with painting, however, it's a good idea to look for what kind of paint is ideal for bathrooms. For walls that are mold-resistant, make sure to choose only paint with high gloss. The reason for this is that glossy paint can resist moisture much more effectively than flat paint, and high-gloss paint is better at preventing water spots and discoloration.

Pick a Shower Curtain Carefully

If you're looking for a way to change your shower, you may be interested in replacing the shower curtain. If a solid shower door isn't in the budget or your plans, you'll want to be careful about selecting a shower curtain that will work great for your bathroom. With the right shower curtain, you can make sure that mildew won't begin to grow in between the creases. Keeping the curtain open after a shower can also help ensure that mold won't begin to grow as a result of your letting the water rest in the curtain.

As you look for what kinds of changes you can make to the bathroom to make it mold resistant, you can see for yourself how remodeling can be a great way to give the bathroom a new look and be ideal for stopping mold.
